Frequently asked questions about software development with EPSIA
On this page EPSIA answers frequently asked questions about custom software projects, fixed prices, project durations, existing software systems, source code, remote development and the use of AI in software development.
What does software development with EPSIA cost?
The cost of a software project with EPSIA depends on the agreed scope of work. Delivery at a fixed price is based on a functional specification that defines requirements, interfaces and acceptance criteria.
A project usually starts with a clearly defined first step at a fixed price, for example an architecture review, an assessment of an existing software system or a requirements analysis with a functional specification. The results of this first step belong to the customer and can be used even if EPSIA is not commissioned with the subsequent implementation.
How long does a software project with EPSIA take?
The duration depends on the scope and the technical requirements. Past projects give an indication: a Windows application for checking documentation was developed and delivered within around three months. A booking platform was rolled out to 31 locations within 15 weeks. For the planned modernisation of existing machine software, a time frame of eight to ten months was estimated.
EPSIA determines the actual project duration after analysing the requirements and the development effort involved.
Does EPSIA take over software developed by someone else?
EPSIA takes over existing software even when the original developers are no longer available or knowledge about the system has been lost.
EPSIA secures and analyses the existing source code, restores a reproducible build and release environment as far as possible, and examines the architecture, processes, interfaces and known faults. On this basis, further support, bug fixing or modernisation can be planned with a reliable effort estimate.

Which programming languages and technologies does EPSIA use?
EPSIA has project experience with a range of programming languages, frameworks and technical systems, including:
- C and C++ with Qt, qmake, CMake and MinGW
- Embedded C and C++ as well as PlatformIO
- C# and .NET including Windows Forms
- PHP, JavaScript, TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js, React and Electron
- Python for tools, data analysis and automation
- MariaDB, MySQL and MongoDB
- MVTec HALCON for industrial image processing
- Modbus, CANopen, EtherCAT and RS485 for technical communication
- Linux and Windows systems going back to Windows 95
After a technical assessment, EPSIA can also take over existing software written in other programming languages. What matters is the analysis of the existing system, not the programming language alone.
Who owns the source code of an EPSIA project?
Customers receive the source code agreed for their project together with the necessary build information, automated tests and the agreed technical documentation. The aim is that the software can be built in a traceable and reproducible way.
Pre-existing EPSIA components and platforms may be excluded. One example is EPSIA's in-house software platform iSDK, on which parts of machine and control software are built. iSDK remains the property of EPSIA and is licensed to the customer for use within the respective project.
Does EPSIA work remotely?
EPSIA is a software company based in Berlin and works for customers across Germany, both remotely and on site.
Even machine and plant projects can be developed and tested partly remotely. A new wafer alignment for inspection systems, for example, was developed without EPSIA having its own production system. Testing took place at the machine builder in Berlin and remotely on systems in the customer's series production in Asia.
Does EPSIA use AI in software development?
EPSIA uses AI tools to support its own software development. Software generated or modified with AI is subject to defined development rules and automated checks of architecture and source code.
EPSIA does not develop chatbots, RAG systems or AI products for end users. At EPSIA, AI is a tool within the software development process.
